Bamboo Houses: Are They Worth It?
My husband and I went on a road trip last weekend. We were driving down the interstate when we saw a billboard advertising a company that made bamboo houses. We are considering building a house soon and the companys showcase was only ten miles down the road. We decided that we wanted to check out these bamboo houses. We were so surprised by the array of options people who use bamboo to build their houses have. The particular company whose showcase we visited builds houses that are completed made of bamboo, as well as houses that use bamboo as the main structural material. Some of the bamboo houses that we saw there looked almost exactly like regular houses. Others incorporated an exotic or tropical theme that I was not crazy about. My husband, on the other hand, loved the bamboo houses that looked like they came directly from a tropical desert island.

I don’t have a garden. In fact, I don’t even know if I would be able to keep a garden alive. I do however, enjoy looking at gardens. I absolutely love flowers. I have thought about planting a garden in my yard before. To get some ideas, I looked at gardens online and viewed some of my neighbors gardens. The most beautiful garden I have ever seen was my neighbors “secret garden” as she puts it. It is surrounded by shrubs and hidden from the road, and she’s looking at gazebos for sale to complete the “enchanted” look – a picturesque gazebo right in the centre of the garden. It takes up her whole back yard! It has a fountain and many rose bushes. There is a birdbath and a little walkway and benches. There were vines of morning glories as well as a beautiful lilac bush. It was so fragrant. I would love to have a garden like hers. Everything was in bloom and just a joy to walk through. I doubt I could grow one as extravagant as that.

In the last ten years, it has become increasing popular to use a lawn mower dethatching blade to thatch one’s yard with instead of a thatching rake. A a professional landscaper having thatched 100s of lawns, I think that a rake works a lot better and this is why:
In order to use a lawn mower dethatching blade, tha lawn needs to be mowed to a very low height and this has a tendency to scalp a lawn. Then the thatching blade is run over the lawn and this process kills a lot of the remaining grass. A thatching rake is a lot softer on a lawn. The way the blades are designed, they pull up on the thatch rather than scaping it into the soil. Of course the best way to thatch a lawn is with a dethatching rake which is very fast and not nearly and damaging as a lawn mower dethatching blade.
